Skills, Confidence And Opportunity – A Recipe For Success?

Government figures released this week tell us that almost 20% of young people aged between 16 and 24 in the UK are classified as NEETS (Not in Education, Employment or Training) – that’s a staggering amount of potential sat around on sofas watching Loose Women! In a bid to change this the government have launched a plan to incentivise businesses to employ young people, with a bonus if they can keep them in employment, training or education for 12 months or more...

Hollywood Plays It Safe

The entertainment industry seems to be surviving through the financial crisis, in an increasingly unpredictable environment and Hollywood is no exception as it saw romantic drama The Vow, starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, top the US box office chart ahead of Valentine's Day. "This was the first non-holiday weekend that four films opened with more than $20m each....The only other time when four new releases did that well was over Christmas weekend in 2008" said Paul Dergarabedian of box office analysts Hollywood.com.

Leadership Under Fire

Being a boss is always challenging but it seems more so than ever these days. Given the tough economy, unhappy workforces and your pay packet and bonus under scrutiny. So what does it take? Well last year we did some research on ‘Leadership for the future’ and discovered that Courage and Resilience were ranked pretty highly amongst the leadership traits that would be required for successful bosses : and those attributes seem more important than ever. Many of the tough decisions that have to be made may be unpopular with the press and workforce (eg selling off brands, factories or downsizing) and so need personal courage to see them through. Added to this, having the stamina and resilience to face the business challenges and remain positive and be able to inspire others to deliver outstanding performance.........it all sounds like a tall order.

Innovative Behaviours

Scanning through the business pages it seems that in the current economic climate innovation is a critical part of a business’ ability to make or break. Research in Motion (pioneers of Blackberry), current boardroom shakeup is partially due to the fact that they didn’t keep ahead of the game with smart phone innovation – much to the delight of Apple and Google who built on their product and forged ahead in the marketplace. Kodak were so consumed with roll film they didn’t look up and consider the possibilities of digital, despite producing one of the first digital cameras back in 1975.
