“Being the sum greater than the parts” is an obvious idea – and one I was working with a group on this week to implement. The initial energy, passion and enthusiasm was terrific but soon wanes when it comes down to the very practical question as to: “what will I have to compromise on to do it ‘One way’ vs ‘My way’?” . Mmmmmm....now there’s the rub. What really helped was having the group be clear on the hierarchy of priorities in their mind and to test possible solutions against that ‘pecking order’. In this case it was : The company, The Region, the Team, My business, and then Me. So it allowed the group to ask the question from the perspective of ‘what is best for the company?’ or ‘what is best for the Team’. It therefore depersonalises the issue and allows people to be objective, rather than getting tied up in their emotions.
